Below are six of the thousands of cards that were collected but never used for the fifth edition of Kenkyusha's New Japanese-English Dictionary (see also 88, 95, 112, 128, 134, and 143). The cards were prepared by collecting words and phrases from English sources and matching them to Japanese words and phrases. There were several reasons why the cards were not used, perhaps the most important being a policy decision to base the Japanese headwords and examples on actual Japanese usage, not on back-translations from English.
