The word ハーフ sometimes causes consternation for native speakers of English, as its association with "half-breed" and similar derogatory English terms makes it seem derogatory in Japanese as well. But here's a citation that shows both a nonderogatory use of the term and its nonapplication to a person who might be of mixed Japanese-Chinese parentage. The first speaker in this excerpt from a novel is a wealthy elderly woman, and the second is a young man. They are discussing the background of a middle-aged man.
